mite.nano, our little app for the macOS menu bar, is now available in an updated version. The add-on should automatically prompt you for a restart, so you don’t need to download anything manually.

What’s new?

In version 1.1.0, we have expanded the »Projects« section in the drop-down menu, from where you can create a new time entry. Thanks for all your suggestions and feedback across different channels.

1. Projects are now displayed grouped by customer, by default. This new view should hopefully provide more clarity, especially if you have several projects for different customers with the same name.
2. Alternatively, you can now choose in the settings to have mite.nano display only customers in this section. In this case, you’ll first select the customer and then their project, adding an extra layer to the menu. We suggest to try out the new settings yourself and decide which view works better for you. We assume that the new customer view will be faster and easier to grasp for accounts with many projects.
3. After selecting a project, you choose the service for the time entry. Services are now displayed grouped by billability, as they already are in the browser version. This change is also meant to improve clarity, particularly when a service is set up both as billable and non-billable.
4. For customers, projects, and services with long names, more characters are now displayed. The menu adjusts further in width.

Additionally, the new version of mite.nano includes security and stability updates.

Without mite.nano yet?

mite.nano is a complementary app for macOS that sits in the menu bar. The currently ticking timer is always visible there, so you can keep an eye on your hours without switching context, and the timer is thus almost impossible to forget.

For our official iPhone app there's an update available on the App Store. Version 1.2.0 includes two new features and some polishing:

• Add a new project or service while creating a new time entry. When selecting the project or the service, click on the icon with the plus sign on the right-hand side of the search field to add one that's missing, fast.
• Forget forgotten timers. If a timer is still running on another day than the currently selected one mite will show you a small orange indicator in the app header.
• The app has now arrived at the new domain mite.de too. Also, we polished some little things here and there.

Thanks for your feedback on all channels thus far. Adding projects and services right from within the app has been your top suggestion. Hopefully, this update will improve your workflows a little bit.

The first update of mite.nano, our app for the macOS menu bar, is available. If the app is already installed on your Mac, a notification should pop up automatically, asking you to please restart it.

Version 1.0.2 includes regular security updates plus three little improvements of the area labeled »Last used«:

1. mite.nano now suggests up to ten instead of only five last used time entries to pick and start a new time entry. We wanted to raise the possibility to suggest something relevant here, and ten entries should still be scannable enough.
2. The suggestions are now sorted by customer, not by project. This should especially speed up picking an entry in case you have several projects with the same name for different customers.
3. Every character couunts: mite.nano now makes better use of the available horizontal space. This should improve the identification of customers, projects, and services with long names.

This is a small update of mite.nano. Regarding a future bigger one, we'd like to emphasize that yes, we heard your feedback on all channels asking for a future support of notes of time entries. Thanks for telling us. Thus far, we haven't found a convincing way to realize it. But, we'll keep tinkering.

There's a first update available on the App Store for our official iPhone app. Version 1.1 includes two improvements and one bugfix:

• Swipe left or right to switch between days.
  To navigate to an earlier or future day, there were and still are arrow buttons available in the top navigation. The new gesture should make switching days even easier, and facilitate the use of the app with a single hand.

• Pull to refresh: Drag the list of a day's time entries downward to manually update all of its data.
  Until now, you had to switch days to force a reload. The new gesture should speed up the process, and improve the app for those who use mite on several devices at the same time.

• Minor bugfix: If you stopped the timer on a time entry outside of the app by directly switching the timer to another entry, the app didn't update the hours of the first entry correctly.

Hopefully, this update will improve mite for iPhone a little. The two new gestures have been the top user requests so far. Thanks for your numerous, constructive feedback on all channels! We are happy to hear that you appreciate the app.

Features

mite.nano wants to make it easier for you to track your time on a Mac. It sits in your menu bar. Whatever you’re working on, you can always keep an eye on a running timer. Double-click to stop the timer, never forget it.

When clicking on mite.nano, a sleek pop-up menu will appear. Switch the timer to another time entry, create a new entry by picking from your recently used ones or by selecting another active project and service.

Furthermore, if you use mite with several teams, mite.nano lets you switch accounts easily.

mite.nano will cooperate smoothly with mite in your browser or on your smartphone. All data are stored centrally on our servers, so mite.wherever is always up-to-date.

~~ Update: Since 2023, timeBro is called memtime. ~~

timeBro is an application for macOS and Windows that aims to help you to track your times faster and more accurately. Once installed, the app will run in the background and will automatically record how much time you spent working with every program, every document, every e-mail.

timeBro will display the recorded data in a daily calendar view. Based on this data, you will then create your time entries. Thanks to the new integration, you can now export these time entries from timeBro to mite.

timeBro allows you to assign your time entries to projects and services as well. When configuring the integration, you can choose which of your mite.projects should be available in timeBro. Also, you can choose which mite.services should be available on each project.

Setup

Before timeBro and mite will be able to work together, you’ll have to setup the connection once:

1. First, please allow API access for your user in mite. Click on your user name in the upper right corner, activate API access, copy your API key, and save changes. The mite.api is our open data interface. timeBro will access your mite.data over this programming interface.
2. New to timeBro? You can download a test version. When timeBro asks which app to connect, choose mite. If you already use timeBro, head over to the settings and choose mite at the tab »Connected Apps«. Furthermore, timeBro will need the login address of your mite.account: https://myTeam.mite.de/
3. After having installed timeBro, the app will ask for your API key. Furthermore, you will be able to specify some personal preferences how exactly the two apps should work together.

Done! From the tab »Time tracking« in timeBro, you will now be able to export your time entries to mite.

Oh no, this update does not only feature a pimped button here and a prettier color there. Daniel Rinser and Victor Saar re-built their native iPhone app mite.go from scratch.

Although mite.go kept its main features, the new version feels quite different. Adding time entries, running the timer, managing customers, projects, and services—all of these tasks can be handled much more smoothly, thanks to the re-thought interface, optimized for current iPhones with larger Retina displays and iOS8.

The detached timer tab is gone. Instead, you can now access all time tracking features directly from one single tab, as you’re used to from mite. Plus, the weekly calendar found its way into mite.go, too.

Last but not least, mite.go caught up from a technical point of view. Unsurprisingly, lots of things have changed since 2010, when the two independant developers released the first version of their app.

Please head over to the App Store to download the update. If you use mite.go already, the update is for free. For new users, it’s $4.99 (4.99 €, 5.00 CHF).

Please note: mite.go communicates with your mite.account through the mite.api, our open data interface. You’ll have to allow API access for your account first, so the app will be able to work properly. Click on your user name in the upper right-hand corner of mite to allow API access.

mite.desk, the windows client for mite developed by 69°‘s Thomas Bandt in 2009, is free now: it’s available on GitHub under a free licence. If you’re a user, you can download it for free. If you’re a developer, you can improve, extend, built-on, or learn from it as you wish.

Thanks for your great decision, Thomas! We really appreciate it. It’s fair, wise, and awesome to open source a project instead of silently shutting it down, in case one does not have the time or energy to maintain it anymore. Fingers crossed for you, mite.desk: hopefully, you’ll meet some kind developers who wish to grant you a second life.
